This semester was my first semester doing Intermediate Ceramics. My main goal was at first to be able to center and make better projects, but my goals shifted as those things got easier for me. At first, I worked solely on centering and pulling up well, I thought that I wouldn't be able to make very complex projects or anything very complicated or original. But, gradually, I got better at those things and they became easier; and I began to focus on fine-tuning my skills and making my projects more creative and true to me.
Throughout the semester, I tried many different glazing techniques to try and make my projects more individualized and unique. While the ideas didn't always work as I wanted them to, I learned a lot about the glazes as well as design and my capabilities through my mistakes. Gradually, I began to focus more on using the white glaze to create projects with a lot of movement in them, and have been experimenting with that more and more. i first got the hang of this with my set of 3 project, and have carried it into the rest of my projects.
My set of 3 inspired me to look more into what the white glaze combined with other colors could create. The next project I used it in was my tall project, where I used the white and pink to create an ombre or gradient color scheme. I also used it in a bowl and mini pitcher to lighten the colors on the inside of them, making them lighter as well as more fluid. After that I made a cup that had a couple areas where green and white ran together in interesting and different ways, and I will try (within my last couple days of wet clay and new projects) to make another project where the colors turn out fluid and full of movement due to the white glaze.
The use of white glaze requires a lot of thought since it runs so much and can pool up at the bottom and make the project stick to the kiln. I've struggled with this in a few projects but overall it helped me improve my critical thinking about my projects and has made me a better artists because of that. Because of this, I can safely say that my theme helped me improve my skills and forced me to think outside the box, yet still with practicality, about my projects. Overall, I would say I definitely achieved more than I thought I would this semester, hit all my goals, and made some very memorable projects that I am very proud of myself for.
